September Birthstone: Sapphire Jewelry

Monday, September 25, 2017

A precious gem symbolizing wisdom, loyalty and nobility – sapphire is a wonderful representation for the September birthstone.

Although most people typically think of sapphires as a rich, deep blue gemstone, the mineral corundum, actually occurs in a rainbow of hues, except red, which earns the classification of rubies instead. The name sapphire comes from the Latin sapphirus and Greek sappheiros meaning “clue stone”. Though some people believe the original of the word to come from the Sanskrit word sanipriya, which meant “dear to Saturn”.

Along with its ruby red counterpart, sapphires are incredibly durable gemstones, measuring a 9 on the Mohs scale. This makes them valuable for jewelry but also in industrial applications including scientific instruments, high-durability windows, watches and electronics.

What Does Sapphire Symbolize?

Sapphires have been popular gemstones since the Middle Ages, where their celestial blue color symbolized heaven and attracted divine favor and wise judgement.

Since then, many cultures and religions have used the stone when seeking wisdom and spiritual enlightenment. In 1981, Britain’s Prince Charles gave Lady Diana a 12-carat blue sapphire engagement ring, crowning sapphire a symbol of royal love. Prince William later gave this ring to Catherine Middleton when he proposed in 2010.

Sapphires are said to symbolize loyalty, nobility, sincerity and integrity. They are associated with focusing the mind, maintaining self-discipline and channeling higher powers.
